Sew What?........ Orange is the New Denim, a dress that is.

This African fabric has had sew many lives! It started out as a skirt then it was cut up into another top and now it has come to life in this cute little number. The denim in the skirt bottom is all re-fashioned denim. I have tons of old denim to work with so I try to use it as often as I can.  I like the different hues of the denims mixed with this orange top, something you would not normally put together. This is a super cute summer dress that can be dressed up or down, you can rock a pair of heels or sneakers with this little number. This dress is a mixture of  two patterns, Butterick 5982 for the bottom and Simplicity 1873 for the top.

OK so let me tell you that I did two photo shoots for this one dress. Originally we went to the city to take pictures and I loved the background view soooo much. When we got home and I looked at my pictures all I could see is the wrinkles in this dress and each panel seam in the skirt was noticeable! the bottom was not one seamless looking skirt. [Ya'll know what I said about ironing your garments right?] Well I realized I had not given the dress a FRESH ironing before this shoot and to top that off we had to get changed in the car so the dress was balled up all kinda way getting it on. So I said I can not post those pictures but they came out so good it was a shame.

Today we went outside on our street to take more photos and low and behold the wind was kicking our butts! I was like damn it, I give up! We took a few pictures of my FRESH PRESSED dress, blowing in the wind but what I decided to was post them ALL....so here is a picture heavy post with two different sceneries, all because of WRINKLES!

[Above.... A few shots in front of Mi' Casa  nicely pressed dress & Below... are the pictures we took in the city the  same dress not pressed....don't get me wrong the dress is still the bomb, just a little wrinkly [real word I swear]...... go ahead go back to the pictures at the top and see if the dress is wrinkle free, go head!
[I know  you're probably saying, the dress was not that bad and you're probably right but in my eyes I needed it pressed....carry-on]

I may have to take inspiration with the skirt from you, I have had this pattern (Butterick) in my stash for a while now, I have made the Cynthia Rowley one 3 times so far with no end in site. I love the denim bottom....! And the top! Ok, I just love everything.
Have you made the whole Butterick pattern yet?

    1. I was on the fence about the mixture of the fabrics for this dress and then they grew on me. I have not yet made the entire Butterick dress, I will in the spring. I hate making muslins for simple things like this dress and that's my problem. I need to make a muslin for the top since there were major fitting issues. But this dress ain't gonna conquer me I will prevail. Thanks for stopping by!

  10. Somehow I stumbled across your blog (googling images for B5982) This dress is adorable. I absolutely love it. I would pay top dollar for this dress. In addition to that you have given me a wonderful idea for denim and the tons of jeans my husband recently gave me to be dropped off at goodwill. I'm so excited about doing something similar that I can hardly contain myself. Thanks for sharing!

  17. I love the skirt it's beautiful! Quick question, when making the skirt did you cut the panels the same size or did you stagger the panel widths? Also is it gathered at the top? Thanks in advance.
