DIY Rope Basket with Recycled Denim [...And the Fabric Mart gift certificate winner is announced!

If you've been following my Instagram you know that I started making a  DIY rope basket this week. I made a few videos that show how I started my DIY rope basket HERE and HERE. Well it's finished! I have seen several DIY rope bowls on the web and was able to put together how they were done with a post from mo bedell. Thanks Mo! She doesn't show you how to add the fabric  to the rope, so all I did was wrap it around the rope as I went along. Since I wasn't sure how the wrapping was going to work I did not start it at the very beginning of the rope, that's why it's white in the very middle. I assume that I would use a folded bias fabric if I did not want the raw edges showing in this type of project, I gotta research that a little before I try it.

I am going to make a tutorial because I'm hooked! I've seen a rugs and I want experiment on different shapes and sizes. So look-out for the tutorial coming real soon. For my first basket I used recycled denim, one of my favorite things to work with. I used several shades from my stash. I also used a top-stitching  yellow color to sew my DIY rope basket together, it was only right since I was using denim. The rope is just your regular clothes-line rope from Walmart. I used almost two packs for this basket.

You wanna hear a funny story? OK since you twisted my leg. I was fabric shopping several weeks ago and I knew I wanted to make a rope basket. So I bought some cotton rope from the fabric store. I bought the fat-est rope that they had which was like a inch in thickness and I bought 10 yards that cost me $6.00. I was like I am going to make a really cool rope basket with this rope. You may see where this story is going by now.... so I get the rope home and I sit at my sewing machine ready to start my basket it was only then did I notice that there was NO WAY IN HELL this rope was fitting under my sewing foot! I laughed so hard I almost pissed my pants! So it was at that time to took my butt to Walmart. [that's what I get for always trying to be extra]
Thanks to all the people you stopped by to look at my fabrics and enter the giveaway. I hope you found something on my blog that will have you visit again!
All the entries were put into the basket and one person is the winner of the $25.00 gift certificate to Fabric Mart.......
DL-FR you have 72 hours to contact me or another winner will be chosen.

    1. Faye your machine can sew through the cotton rope. The ropes range from about 0.187 to 3/16-inch thick and the average machine can do it. My singer and brother can do it.

  2. Great job! Back in the 80's when Design Originals came out with coiled fabric baskets and I took a class I knew there had to be a faster way. I used my machine with a zig zag stitch and thought I would offer to teach a class at a fabric/quilt store I worked part time. The owner told me I was crazy, nobody would want to learn this! I should never have listened to her....there have been so many books published in the past few years. To think I did it in 83-84 or so. Anyway, you can also make coasters...a set makes a great gift and they take little fabric and time to make...and you can wash them!

  3. Thanks for another great post, and for the great end story. I need more than two hands and feet to count the number of times a great idea I have has fallen flat and I "pee my pants" thinking "Really???" Then share the laugh.

  5. The denim makes your basket really shine. I like it way better than fabric wraps. I am curious how any sewing machine handles the heft? My Viking is such a pussy I can't feature it working. Love the braided handles, too. Great photos.

    1. I went through three and it was all on those handles that I ended up hand stitching. I used the parts of the side seams of the denim that had triple thickness that along with braiding them together gave my BERNINA a run for it's money and they won!!

  7. I am going through a whole recycled denim love fest right now and I am also working on several denim baskets and totes. Love what you created. There are so many wonderful tutorials on rope baskets on the web. The big box hardware stores carry large (200 ft) packages of cotton rope also for a very reasonable price. Keep being creative. I am glad I discovered your blog.

  9. The basket is so cool! However, did you make this in one sitting or were you able to start and stop working on it?

    1. I stopped and started. It took me three sittings but I could easily do this in one.Once you get the hang ofit and mold that bottom curve, you're good and it goes fast.

  10. This is awesome. Love your handles. I've been on a clothesline kick this last month and I finally succumbed to fabric wrapping. Did you want to shoot yourself about 4" up tangled crazily in fraying denim? I'm gonna pin yours for the handles.

    1. At first I was cutting my strips too short and after trying to wrap and sew the beginning of a new piece I let that go real quick.

  11. I love this basket. I saw a rug made form just the leftover jean waistbands. I'd try that in a similar style, no rope necessary. I need a giant basket to lift stuff into a loft.

  13. I made this type of basket in the 80's I was selling them at a craft store to earn money for a new sewing machine. I was a stay at home mom with 4 boys. I still have some of them that I made back then. I even redid some with different fabrics. When I made them the first time I even surged the edges of the fabrics so they wouldn't ravel too much. I even have a Christmas one that I still use. I was them in my washer as well.
