Coming to America with Gertie [Sew What? Series Butterick 6453 DIY Dress]

[Butterick 6453 DIY Dress was made for and modeled by my daughter Mori]
When I was thinking about a title for this DIY Dress post I knew Africa had to be in there some where and you know for IOS I had to mention Gertie so my dress could be found online. I had a few doo-sies that left me cracking up but may have left my readers wondering what the heck I was talking about. So this was the winner but a close second place was "Gertie Goes to Africa!"

Anywhoooo, I had this fabric in my stash from last year. I found it at Joann's and snatched up 12 yards and this was my first cut into the bolt. They may still have this print but let it be known, there are no "African Print" sections in all of their stores and it may be with the quilting cottons. I actually had to educate my local Joann store about African Prints and show them where they were in their own store! [head wrap fabric is also from Joann's]

Gertie was the reason that I pulled this fabric out of my stash. I bought Butterick 6453 and I knew that this was a pattern I was going to actually use this summer. [I say that because I have a pattern buying disorder, I buy them and put them in my cabinet and probably won't use it for a long time if ever. The Joann's employee at the store near my job that I visit for lunch all the time is trying to help me with that habit!] The dress, simply put is cute! It's lining free and the easiest thing ever to sew. Shout out to Gertie and Butterick for this summer fun dress.

I don't normally comment on the accessories that we use in the photographs but I had to share this. That dark bracelet is really purple and every-time I pull it out for a picture Mori says "Mom I really want you to buy a black bracelet and stop using that purple bracelet" I always respond to that with a "It looks black in the pictures" In this last picture, I see the purplish bracelet!

For those of you who know about the sewing magazine I am publishing, I wanted to let you know it's coming along and the Go-Fund-Me is still open for a few more weeks. If you wanted to donate there is still time, just click the picture. All donations big or small are appreciated.

  1. You gave me an idea what to do with my African Print fabric. Love the title "Gertie goes to Africa". Your daughter looks amazing in the dress and the print is very vibrant.

  2. This is gorgeous on Mori! Perfect fabric choice for this dress especially since I've only seen it in those dainty florals. Girl, if you had used Gertie Goes to Africa it would have set the online sewing community into fits! Everyone would have wanted to know where she was going...hahahahaha! Though I love your title cause Coming to America is a classic!

    1. Bahahahaha, you're right! I didn't think about the ramification of saying Gertie goes to Africa!!! Coming to America was on TV today, I got a chuckle out of that.

  3. I love what you do with your prints/patterns! I'm a relatively new sewer and I never know how to pick material to buy for patterns. But I have this one in my pattern stash, and I think I'll pull it out now. Thanks!

    1. I guess I don't really have that problem because I buy fabric all the time just because I like it with nothing specific in mind. I'll admit O have waaaaayyyy more fabric than one person should have. I usually pick out a pattern and rummage through my stash and make it happen.

  6. Oh wow your daughter looks stunning! I love the combination of fabric and pattern. Is the self-fabric belt part of the pattern?

  7. S.T.U.N.N.I.N.G.

Also, Joanns...sigh. I don't go to mine unless I have to. It's disorganized and the staff aren't helpful. They aren't treated well and morale is low, so mostly I feel bad that their work environment isn't better.

  8. Once again, Mori looks great and the dress is 'wow level'. I, too, am like the Tell Tale Tasha - You exude with creativity and you continue to entice my right brain to think outside of the box.
