My SEWing Space

FINALLY! Let me just say that I am so glad to be finished with this task. It's hard to try and complete remodels while working a full-time job, maintaining a blog and sewing all at the same time, somethings got to give. I was determined to move in my last few items this past weekend and complete this room. I have had several rooms in my home dedicated to my sewing & crafts and last year I lost my sewing room because we decided to give our sons their own rooms. [Not that they really needed their own spaces because in reality that just means two dirty rooms instead of one!] So with that move I set up shop in the dining room, which is at the front of my home, yes you could see everything when you came in the door. At first I made sure that I kept the area clean but you know that wore off. I just hoped that nobody showed up unexpectedly!

......So I decided to move down to the basement, I had my business office down there in prior years and then it became the family computer area. It is not a finished basement but the walls are brick and the floor is concrete, we have a drainage ditch outlying the basement for the sub-pump. We are considering getting it finished but we have 8 years of college in the near future sooooooo, that may be a pipe dream. I figured I would be OK as is and decided to get the remodel started, which leads us to this reveal today.

These are the before pictures with all our stuff used to the back area we use for laundry. Yeah it was hard to do laundry for a while. I had to weed through things, throw out things and give some things a new home.
This is the faux leather that I used to make my room dividers, I think they came out really well and they will do for now.

I added decorative paper to the back of my shelves used as a base for my cutting/craft table.

Welcome to my newly decorated SEWing Space! [I still have a few nic-nacks to add but this is it right now.] The picture start at the front and then around the room.
My "Rippin Ain't Easy" unconventional masterpiece!

This area will be changed. I am going to add a floor length mirror under this window. I could not find a bare wall for a mirror and as I was taking these photos I realized that was a good open spot, so I will find a new home for those items on this wall.
This here is Harry, who was thrown in the garage for several years. A fresh coat of golden paint and he is back bolder than ever living under my cutting table.[Harry is ode' to my mother]

  20. I love how you transformed that basement space into an amazing space to create! Love it! If I may ask where do you press at? And is that all of your fabric? You are so creative that I'm wondering if you buy as you're inspired or if there is a secret stash.

    1. Well Carolyn since you asked, I have four containers in the garage with fabric, I just haven't brought them into my sewing space yet. I have to put them on bolts and some will have to remain in the see through containers due to space. I buy fabric all the time. As far as pressing, I have an ironing board behind those curtains and there is space right there for pressing.

  32. Make sure you have good lighting; it's easy to get absorbed in what you are doing and not realize you have eyestrain - until the headache hits. and on the topic of lighting, sunlight and some [if not all] electric lights cause fabrics to stain or fade. i keep mine in closed boxes with right side folded in. It's sad when you think, "Oh! I'll use that lovely green linen", etc., only to find it is sun bleached down the center.

  38. Where did you get such a fabulous cutting table? Also wanted to know where did you get the conjoined bookshelves and table from. I'm in the process of designing a sewing room for a small space and I love to incorporate those two pieces. Thanks!!!

    1. The book shelve is from IKEA. My table was made form a door slab from Lowes and put on top of book shelves. If you get a chance look at this table Mimi G made because this is my next table for my sewing room. LINK- http://mimigstyle.com/big-ass-diy-cutting-table/ You don't have to make it as big as hers but the idea is a more solid surface

  40. Oh My, Oh My I just can't stand you right now, LOL. You made this beautiful space that any creator would enjoy working in. I have a studio (added room on the back of garage), but really didn't take the time to decorate yet. Also starting magazine idea awesome, I would purchase, subscribe, and tell everyone that will listen.

  41. Funky Fresh! Represents the ultimate chill-tivity (creativity) spot. What a blessing that room as turned out to be! "I don't bother you-don't bother me" Yesssss!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I like what you did with your space. Did you end up with more room than the dining room had? It makes me realize all the more that lining 2 walls in my sewing room with shelves was a mistake. Because now they're stuffed with books and make the room seem about a foot smaller in each direction. I wish I had left room for art. Oh well, maybe that will change someday. But at least it's not in the basement. I have nothing against basement sewing rooms, IF they are well lit, warm and dry, of which my old basement space was none. Based on that experience, I'd have made curtains or installed doors on the dining room before moving.

    1. Hey Justgail, Staying in my dining room was not up for negation, it's in the front of my home when you enter the door and that's not a good look for people visiting my home. My basement is not went because we have a big dehumidifier down there, I had more lighting added and I use fan in the summer and the house heater does the trick in the winter. If I'm still a little chilly down there I have a heater. I have waaaaay more room that I had in my dining room. So this is working form me now but come September when my last child is off to college, I may take the family room as my upstairs sewing room and make the basement their game room.
