Heeey Ya'll it's really raining outside so this post if perfect for a DIY Raincoat! I teamed up with @TabithaSewer for this adventure in creating our own DIY raincoats. I have so many rain puns on my mind right now it's ridiculous but I will start with my theme music for this post. In the words of New Edition "Sunny days, everybody loves them. Tell me baby can you stand the rain? Storms will come, This we know for sure (This we know for sure) Can you stand the rain?? Whoaaa, Whoaaa, Can you stand the rainnnnn?
OK so let's get started. When I thought about raincoats I knew I wanted to use vinyl for this project but the task was to figure out what gauge to use. Ha! did you even know that they were sold by weight, known as gauges? Well they are and I knew this because I have sewn purses with vinyl.
[#1: 16g/ #2:top left 4 g/#3 top right thin vinyl/ #4 bottom left 20 g #5 Bottom right #40 g]
I had some vinyl on hand but they were a super thin weight probably between 6-8 gauges and I had a wrinkled piece of a 12 gauge vinyl. I went to the store to look at a heavier weight and I ended up purchasing a 16 gauge, which I knew was to stiff for the raincoat but I got it anyway. [That's my disclaimer to say I knew what i was doing going into this project]
I decided I was going to work through the 16 gauge even if it was not going to be wearable I wanted to see if I could sew this thickness or should I say stiffness. I have to tell ya this was a crazy ideal but I was down to my deadline and too vested in the 16 gauge so I pushed through it none the less. I'm just going to tell you that this will be a piece in my sewing room that I can laugh about on a dreary day, that's for sure and it will be perfect to wear while doing the robot dance.
Notes from this project:
--If you choose to use vinyl remember once you start stitching you are committed to that stitch however it may look because there are no do-overs on vinyl!
--I used my Schmetz leather needles size 110/18 because this was a heavy vinyl.
--I put on my walking foot but it was not necessary for the project, it fed through my machine perfectly without the walking foot.
--Remember to extend your stitch length when using vinyl.
--I tried to use tape that I had on hand to hold the pockets on but that was a mistake because it left a film on the vinyl. I should have tried my painters tape for the pockets.
--I also tried to use clips to hold my pieces together for sewing and that was a bust because the vinyl was so stiff and maneuvering it while sewing was awkward. If you are using a vinyl suitable for this type of project you should be able to utilize clips.
--You want to use 12 gauge vinyl or under for this project.
The clear vinyl raincoat is so cool looking with the trim and I will make another one using the 12 gauge for a wearable raincoat for Mori. I used this See & sew pattern because I did not want to get a difficult pattern for this stiff vinyl and it worked out well, not too many issues. This was a really great pattern for an unlined coat, super-duper easy and beginner friendly.
This is the funniest thing EVER!!!! After we finished our pictures in the rain I stood this thing up and it stood tall and proud! Come-on you gotta love that!!!
This raincoat is so cool!! I would be terrified that I'd make a mistake and leave holes all through the material. You are awesome! Love your work!
ReplyDeleteGirl when I tell you all that stitching ain't straight I ain't lying!!! It's like leather your committing to whatever stitch you put in it.
DeleteWow!This is so cool! The trim is perfect! Love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cameila!
DeleteThis is too cute! OMG! IT stood up by itself. lol
ReplyDeleteBet not everyone can say they have a raincoat that can do that!
DeleteHow retro is that? I remember wearing a vinyl raincoat and having a vinyl handbag. When I saw the raincoat standing up I immediately thought 'this looks like the makings of a sci-fi movie'- lol - Undercover Agent 16 Gauge.
ReplyDeleteBaaahhhaaaa! I love it!
DeleteThis looks amazing as usual..Only you can make a piece of vinyl into art! I have to tell you though, your theme music is by New Edition!😄
ReplyDeleteIt definitely is art standing on it's own!!! Thanks Dara.
DeleteThe Boys 2 Men song is so apropo since they're from Philly. BTW, Mori is amazing, she models for you whenever needed and that's so cool. Okay the coat - I want one too! maybe not one that stands up on its own but one too! 😄 This is fabulous!
ReplyDeleteThanks Carolyn and as Hannah corrected me it's New Edition that sings my theme song..lol!!! It is cool and 12 gauge will do it for this project.
DeleteBoyz 2 Men?!?! I am going to beat you with an R & B album!!!! Lol that is clearly New Edition the first Black Boy Band, and don't you forget it!!! Lol. Love this, but is that pattern out of print? I've been looking for it on the website.
ReplyDeleteGurrrrrllllll!!! I knew it was wrong as soon as I read your comment and I heard all their voices in my head the entire time!!! Here you go tho a little Motown Philly!
Delete"Never skipped a beat, na
While cooling on South street
Jet black Benz, plenty of friends
And all the Philly steaks you can eat
Back in school we used to dream about this everyday
Could it really happen?
Or do dreams fade away
Then we started singing them
They said it sounded smooth
So we started a group and here we are
Kickin' it just for you Hannah"
Love it!!!! I'm so glad we met, my Sew Friend!
DeleteGAH...you are so amazing! This raincoat is so wonderful! Can you please share any tips for sewing with vinyl...needles etc.
ReplyDeleteDone! I added notes to the post.
DeleteAwesome! Thanks so much Michelle!!
DeleteThanks Anita!!
DeleteSuch an awesome raincoat. I love it!
ReplyDeleteThat standing raincoat part made me laugh out loud! Mine definitely does not do that ! Thanks for an awesome post and those tips. I'm going to have to try that pattern!
ReplyDeleteFabulous work as usual hun...I so enjoy seeing your day model your gorgeous work. I have this pattern and would never have thought to make it out of vinyl. I recently made a circle skirt using vinyl for my daughter in her fashion school at her college. She wants to wear it over her bathing suit and she wants a sleeveless crop shirt to go with it lol. I used tissue paper over the feet and it was perfect.
ReplyDeleteThis is freaking amazing! I can't stop scrolling through the photos!!!
ReplyDeleteI can't emphasize enough how much I love my raincoat! It's an absolute game-changer when it comes to staying dry and comfortable during wet weather. The raincoat's waterproof and breathable fabric keeps me protected from rain while allowing heat and moisture to escape, ensuring that I stay dry from both the inside and outside. The adjustable features like a drawstring waist and cuffs provide a customizable fit, allowing me to seal out the rain effectively. I also appreciate the added details such as zippered pockets and a storm flap over the zipper, which provide extra functionality and protection. The versatility of my raincoat is another highlight, as it's suitable for both outdoor adventures and everyday use. Investing in a reliable raincoat is a must for anyone who wants to enjoy the outdoors without worrying about the weather! Rain coats NZ
