DIY Ankara Slippers

Need a quick pair of slippers to match your robe, pajamas, or outfit? These slippers are perfect for a vacation or a special event that calls for that for fancy lounging footwear. You don’t have to throw on a pair of flip-flops; level up your look with this DIY.

 Supplies

  • ½ yd Main Fashion fabric
  • ¼ yd Fabric for facing
  • ¼ Faux leather fabric
  • ½ yd Fusible Foam or Fleece interfacing
  • Cardboard- for template and sole of the slipper
  • Flip-flop to create a sole template
  • Glue stick or Glue spray
  • Sock Stop-Anti slip paint (Clear was used for these slippers)
  • Clips (optional pins were used for this project)

Measure the foot area for the top of the slipper. 2 measurements near the toes and the arch of your foot.

Slipper top band: Use the measurement to create the top band template. I mimicked a pair of old slippers for the shape of the top band. I used half of the measurements and cut the pieces on the fold. Cut 2 from the main fashion fabric for each foot.

Slipper top band facing & padding: Create the same template from step 2 and trim ¼” from all the sides. You will use this new template to cut 1 piece from the facing fabric for each foot and 1 piece from the foam or fleece interfacing.

Soles: Trace a flip-flop onto the cardboard.
Cut 1 for each foot from the fashion fabric.
Cut 1 for each foot from the facing fabric.
Cut 1 for each foot from the faux leather fabric.
Sole padding: Take the template and trim ¼” all the way from this template.
Cut 1 piece of cardboard for each foot.
Cut 2 pieces for each foot from the foam or fleece interfacing.

Construction

Slipper top band: Let’s put the top band together. Layer the fashion fabric, foam or fleece, and fashion fabric together. Stitch together with a ¼” seam around all sides and repeat for the other band.

Using a vanishing fabric marking tool to draw quilting guidelines on the band.
Add the stitching on top of the guidelines.
Now pin the facing piece to the quilted band, right sides together, and stitch ¼” seam at the top and the bottom. NOT THE SIDES.
Turn the piece to the right side and press.
Assembling the bottom: For each foot layer, the fashion fabric, foam or fleece interfacing, and facing fabric and pin or use clips.
Stitch together with a ¼” seam for each foot.
Using a vanishing fabric marking tool draw quilting guidelines on the band and add the stitching to the guidelines. I used a grid pattern for the quilt lines.
Mark, the placement for the band
Pin or clip the band to this bottom piece and stitch the sides with a ¼” seam.
Sole Padding: Creating the padding for the soles.
Add glue to the wrong side of the leather piece and place the cardboard on top.
Add glue to the cardboard and place 1 layer of Foam or fleece interfacing on top.
Add glue to the interfacing and add the second piece of interfacing on top.
Add glue to the last layer of interfacing and add the slipper on top. Pin or clip the edges and stitch ¼” seam around the slippers.
Trim any excess padding.
Unfold the bias tape and pin or clip it to the edges around the slipper.
Stitch close to the edge of the bias tape all the way around.
Now flip the bias tap to the bottom of the slipper.
Fold the bias tape under and pin it to the slipper's bottom.
Stitch close the edge of the bias tape all the way around the slipper.
The sewing is finished!
Now add the non-slip paint to the bottom of the slipper. You can add the paint in any pattern you want. I just went with the dots. This paint took 72 hours to completely dry.
Keep in mind that the materials you use for this project will determine how
durable these slippers will be. These were created with a limited life in mind.
They match a robe used for vacation, so I didn’t intend to wear them that often.
These would be great for a bridal party.
A girl’s sleepover or a girl's trip to get pedicures!

Thanks for DIYing with me!
