DIY Ankara elephant necklace |
This is
my twist on the Ankara jewelry tutorial from the June 2020 issue of Sewn
Magazine. I followed Gelenda’s instructions for the most part, but I brought in
a few other elements for this piece. The
tutorial makes it easy for you to create one-of-a-kind pieces. This is a mini-tutorial for my version.
My
supplies:
- 2 pieces
of 1/2” cording/rope
- Scrap
fabric
- A charm
- 2 jump
rings
- Leather
cording
- Wire
(spool)
- Glue gun
I used
1/2” cording for my rings and glued the ends together before applying the tape. I used Ankara fabric scraps from the skirt by creating folded bias strips and wrapping them around the cording until the entire ring was covered, I secured the ends with hot glue. I did that for both rings.
I wrapped the wire around and around and around the fabric-covered cording and secured the ends by twisting the wires together and I added glue as well.
The
elephant was from a necklace that was in my jewelry box.
I opted to use a long piece of
soft leather cording without adding the ribbon clamps [shown] or lobster claw closing.
The soft leather allows you to tie the cording around your neck, leaving it
long or short.
