SEW WHAT?....ANOTHER DIY SIMPLICITY BLAZER THAT's WHAT & A Butterick Skirt!

I swear to you that I am retiring this pattern[Simplicity 1421] for a while. It's such a  great pattern and it seems like everyone likes it or at least they like the African prints that I use to make these blazers. I'm not sure which it is but  it's gonna be a long time before you see me make this again. Soooo with all that being said this blazer is for a client  how already had this amazing African fabric so I decided to add a little re-purposed denim to the mix. I love the void spots where I removed the pockets from the denim I used.  I have done several reviews on this blazer and they were all great, this time around the bias tape kicked my ass! I'm not sure what the problem was but I finally worked it out.

For this blazer I used all different kind of wood buttons not all matching especially on the sleeves. I think that it adds so much character to this already flashy blazer. I did not trim the entire blazer in bias tape as per the pattern. I also did not add the pockets but opted to add faux pocket flaps on the jacket.
I decided to make a suit by adding a skirt [Butterick B6060] I have already made a skirt from this pattern and both times the pattern was a success. This pattern was pretty straight forward. The instructions were not needed for this time around. I made denim piping to sew in the seams of the skirt. I would have made some of the panels with the re-purposed denim but I ran out of the denim I used in the jacket. I did use two other shades of re-purposed denim for the faux pocket flaps and the piping.

I am excited to send this suit to my client and I can't wait to get a photographs of her wearing this suit, fingers crossed that it fits well.

  6. Saw the blazer on the Burda site and all I can say is "WoW!" The jacket is beautiful! I never would've thought to buy this pattern (boring pic on the front of the pattern pkg) but now I am and I'm going to use your blazer as inspiration. Off to check out the rest of your sewing...

    1. I agree with the pattern packaging. I have learned not to judge the pattern by the pictures, you have to look beyond that. I am so glad I bought this pattern because I simply love it and now I am a pro at making this blazer, even though the bias tape was working against me on this one.

    1. Hi Lora, I wish I had a fabric spot that I knew of in my area so that I could see the fabric first-hand but I don't. I order online and I do have a supplier that I get some of the fabric from. For this last blazer I used fabric sent to me from my client. Eryn over at stylesewme.com hipped me to aknfabrics.com and they have a pretty good selection of fabrics.[be warned they sent me the wrong print and I was so frustrated trying to get them to send me the correct fabric I chose, I gave up.] Add a note to your order NO SUBSTITUTIONS.

  9. Hey Michelle,
Gorgeous like usual. Two questions, how did you do the label (Michelle)? I would love to put my name on my garments I make for myself, but haven't figured out a way to do so. Second question, BYW: Build Your Wardrobe was a huge hit with most of the ladies I'm pretty sure. I think it would be awesome to do one in the spring (around March) and feature things like jumpsuits, swimsuit, Little White Dress, maxi dress, Tunic, and some form of an evening attire (wedding, etc). It would also be great to team up with Mimi G, Erika Bunker, Nikki from Beauty J'Adore, yourself, and Mrs Crafty Chick would be awesome. Just a thought! But once again, awesome work.

    1. I am putting together a post on where I bought all my labels, and tags. I am just waiting on a few vendors, I'm trying to get a few freebies to give away to my readers.Stay tuned for that post. Now as for the #buildyourwardrobe, thanks so much you put me in good company! Although I am not sure all those ladies would participate it's definitely something to ponder!
