Michael Kors inspired DIY Denim Jeans & Jacket [Simplicity 1070 & Birkin Flares]

DIY denim jeans and Jacket. Yay! I finally finished another one of my UFO's. I posted pictures on Instagram when I was piecing my denim together. That was a tedious task that I just kept putting off. About a month ago I had the jeans all done except for the waistband. Last week I put my foot down and said get it done! So I finished the waistband and sewed up this jacket to top it off, making a shirt for it was pushing it so I just went with a RTW t-shirt we had on hand.

So my inspiration for this outfit was this Michael Kors "Sloan" cross body bag.[purse no longer available] You know I love me some denim and this was right up my alley, denim and frayed seams! That chevron was what was about to do this project in. Piecing together denim and making it into a chevron piece of fabric was a crazy ideal. Sewing across those denim seams was a pain in my butt.

OK now I had my inspiration picture and I knew I was going to use my Birkin jean pattern for the pants. I added a "V " insert on each hip and the bottom of the front legs is where I use my chevron textile that I made. [The hem of the jeans look a little wonky in the pictures. That's because when I made the textile it was in the V shape and when I hemmed them they cut across the V also folding under some of the fringe. But once she is standing on flat ground it looks fine.]

At the last minute I decided on the Simplicity 1070 jacket. I avoided this pattern because it was for KNITS ONLY but as I looked at it again and I said "that pleather is not knit" and I read the pattern sleeve again. Knit is for the tops, pant and skirt the jacket was not, so a cutting I went.

Pattern:  Simplicity 1070
Pattern Sizing: 12-20
Did it look like the picture on the pattern envelope? Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, super easy
What did you like or dislike about the pattern? Liked everything
Fabric Used: Cotton Denim/Cotton Denim w/Lycra [I wouldn't suggest using denim for the outer front fabric and the facing pieces. It was too stiff  to fold and lay like the front should. I had to press & starch the heck out of it]
Pattern alterations or any changes you made: None
Would you sew it again? Probably not, it's not really my style
Would you recommend it to others? Yes
Conclusion: This was easy to put together and I recommend it to a beginner and all others who are looking for a quick-sew project.
This chair that we used for this shoot was a DIY reupholster project that I did on one of our old chairs for my oldest son's room. We took it outside and had a blast. I almost killed myself a few times over in the trees but it all worked out.

  6. Normally I'm not a fan of frayed denim, but yours is so purposeful with the piecing and the chevrons - so creative. And I love the piecing on the side seam above the hip.
