Just Call me Michelle Warhol! [DIY Bomber jacket Butterick B6181]

What looks like me and is Green, Pink, Blue and Yellow all over? My Andy Warhol inspired image DIY Bomber jacket! Can we talk about this fabric? I put together this imaging for this custom printed fabric. I thought this would be super fun. I didn't know what I was going to make with it but whatever it would be, I knew it would be fun to wear!

So where can you order your own custom printed fabric you ask? I have heard of several places and some of them have good and bad reviews but this was my first time actually ordering. I used Contrado for this project. The best thing about ordering this fabric was they had a sample pack of all the fabrics they offer. I was able to touch the samples and make a educated decision for my fabric choice, #winning I ordered a Sateen twill fabric.

I have to admit that I did not read all the instructions on how to order my fabric and I messed it up. I thought I was ordering 5 yards of fabric and I thought the print would just repeat itself for a continuous print. But what I ordered was 5 panels of my image, which were separated by white boarders. I had to cut the white boarders off my my panels and sew them together thus limiting what I could make with the yardage I had on hand.  I decided on a Bomber jacket [Butterick B6181 View D] and I did have to use another fabric for the sleeves because I did not have enough of the print for the entire jacket. I used a really nice black Ponte knit from Joann's.

Below is the way I actually  ordered my fabric verses what I should have done in the second image. So if your print is not looking the way you want it to look, reach out to customer service and they can walk you through the process.

Alright after I sewed my panels together. it was a little tricky because I had to work with the seams in some areas. Now since I was on a roll with not reading instructions in ordering the fabric, why would I need to read the instructions when putting the jacket together? After all I had made this bomber jacket before. WRONG. Here I read the very beginning and started making the bomber that had the buttons and I noticed it when I was about to add the bottom band. I was saying to myself, I'm pretty sure that zipper should have been installed already. Daaaaannnggg it all to heck!!! Now I had to use the seam ripper but not too much I was able to add that zipper without taking everything out, thank goodness.
Mori was behind the lens today, she did good got my grey hairs, swollen ankles and all!
I will give a future update on this fabric after I wash and wear this a few times, we'll see how the color holds up.  Thanks Contrado for this amazing fabric!

  1. You and your jacket look amazing. I would stop you on the street if I saw it, except I'd be too intimidated by how cool you were.

  2. The bomber is the business! I love it! What happened to you is why I haven't ordered custom fabric yet...can't get my head around the repeat. Mori did a great job. Our gray hairs and swollen ankles show a life well lived - celebrate it woman!

  3. I like it with the black. I don't think the jacket would look as nice if that large a print was used for the sleeves.

  4. Fabulous. A nice touch pairing it with the black as it breaks up the print and gives it a cool vibe. I'm obsessed with bombers. Especially those with unusual fabric accented with black.
